Convent of Christ, Church portal, Tomar
Portugal

It is an altarpiece portal of the century. XVI, with images of the old and new testament. The entire exterior of the Manueline church nave has been designed by Diogo de Arruda since 1510. In 1513, when he was appointed a military engineer and went to work in the fortifications of North Africa, Master João de Castilho continued to work here. His first work is this retable portal, with images of the old and new testament (1513-1515). It consists of 3 architects with a full arch, worked with Manueline and Renaissance motifs and surmounted by the armillary sphere, between Gothic pilasters and niches with images of purely decorative intent, attributed to Diogo de Castilho, younger brother of João de Castilho: Santo Ambrósio /S.Jerónimo / Santo Agostinho / Virgo / Miqueias / Ezequiel / Jeremias / Esaías. It was in this yard opposite the Church portal, that the Cortes that acclaimed Philip II of Spain, king of Portugal, met.
