Die 1953 errichtete Schutzhütte der Polizeidienststelle Garmisch-Partenkirchen lag ebenso wie die benachbarte (und weiterhin benutzbare) Zoll-Hütte in unmittelbarer Nähe des Zugspitz-Gatterls, einem Übergang vom Reintal nach Erwald und Grenzpunkt zu Österreich. Irgendwann nach 2001 wurde nach der Zerstörung der Hütte durch eine Lawine ein Gedenkkreuz errichtet. Ein Wiederaufbau der Hütte selbst scheiterte an den Kosten, die in Zeiten von Einsparungen auch im Öffentlichen Dienst und allgemein geöffneter Grenzen innerhalb der EU kaum vermittelbar sind.
