Plaza del Triunfo in Granada. Front view.2c.
Spain
Formerly there was a Visigoth basilica that during the Arab invasion was destroyed and replaced by a Muslim cemetery, founded in the s. XIII. The cemetery was girded by a strong wall and defended at the entrance of each of the access roads to the town by gates with towers. On the one hand, the triumph joined the enclosure to the fortifications of the Albaycín and, on the other, it linked with the exterior of Granada. Over the centuries, as the population grew, the Triumph in Granada was reducing the depopulation, in which numerous buildings were raised in the early s. XVI. It was urbanized all the right side of the Triumph that in the s. XVII, was one of the most important neighborhoods. Until the s. XIX in it celebrated the population many of its great celebrations. During French domination, in the Triumph of Granada, many patriots were hanged and shot and remained the site of public executions until 1840. In 1856, Mayor D. Manuel Gadeo and Subiza transformed the unclean place into a small park, With gardens and fountains. The opening of the Gran Vía de Colón and its later extension changed the physiognomy of Triunfo, which completely lost it when the Normal School of Teachers was built. Work of the architect Antonio Flores, this building finished destroying the gardens of Triunfo, leaving isolated the column of the monument to the Virgin until its transfer, in 1960, to the new gardens of the Triumph created on the esplanade that occupied the old Bullring. The Monument to the Immaculate Conception is located in the Jardines del Triunfo, next to the Royal Hospital and the chapel of Fray Leopoldo. The devotion of Granada by the Immaculate Conception, was born with the Catholic Monarchs in 1496. Granada was the first Spanish city that swore to admit and defend the theological truth of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, 2 of September of 1618, for this reason it was decided to erect in the Field of the Triumph, before Field of the Favor, the monument to the Immaculate conception. The monument was made by Alonso de Mena, and took 13 years to complete it. At first it was thought that this triumph would rise in the Sacromonte, but because of the difficulties of the place it was finally opted for its current location, taking advantage of the creation of the Plaza del Triunfo was contributed to the urbanization of this space. The Triumph responds to the scheme of Roman column: a basement with inscription, column with reliefs or smooth and on it the image of the Virgin. It has new elements such as ball-point urns inlaid with stones. The Inmaculada has always been present in the art of Granada, many artists present it as a woman dressed as Sun with the Moon under her feet, and twelve stars surrounding her head, or even crushing the head of a dragon, as told in the Apocalypse . In the monument of the Immaculate Conception of the Triumph was represented on heads of cherubs between clouds and the crescent moon, with four musician angels that carry a cardboard in which it reads "Es Maria", the column is decorated with reliefs and in the zone Of the pedestal, where the column is supported, appear four angels fighting against the demons. At some point in its history it also contained relics ceded by the Jesuits and bones found in the Sacromonte, although now only the gaps remain. As curiosity to tell, that three of the four sides of the pedestal where the Virgin is, contained texts apocryphal or not admitted by the Church, and that had been erased in 1777. To give a pleasant walk through the Gardens of Triumph is a beautiful way to approach the history of our beloved Granada, near the Monument to the Immaculate Conception, there are many other monuments to visit, mainly of religious character: cathedral, churches and convents.
