The California State Capitol is located in Sacramento, California. The building houses both the California Senate and its House of Representatives. It also has the governor’s office. Construction of the Neoclassical structure copied from the United States’ Capitol in Washington, D.C., was done between 1861 and 1874. The Capitol is a National Historical Landmark. The top of the spire on the dome is 247 feet (75.3 m) above the ground. Surrounding the building is a beautiful park with several memorial statues. Sacramento is both the capital city of the State of California and the county seat of Sacramento County. The City is located in the northern part of the state at the confluence of the Sacramento River and the American River. Sacramento has a deep sea connection to the San Francisco Bay and acts as an inland port. Historically, the area was the near the center of the California Gold Rush of 1849.
