Dugway Geode Beds, Utah, USA
Utah

The Dugway Geode beds are on public land with some private quarries.  You can hunt for geodes on the public land or pay a small fee per group ($30-100, depending on your take) to one of the private quarries who help you out by uncovering the veins of geodes below the surface.

We visited on a day that one of the companies was making their weekly dig to retrieve geodes for their rock shop.  We had a nice talk with the proprietor.  Only a few years ago, anyone could just walk in and dig around their quarry.  Unfortunately, a series of acts of vandalism and other problems has forced the owners to carry insurance which now requires the public to pay a fee to dig in their private quarry.

I've read elsewhere that some of the geodes glow when in black light.  Very cool!
