La más refinada calle comercial de toda la ciudad de Siena es la Via Banchi di Sopra, junto a esta calle podemos encontrar esta pequeña y agradable plaza, la Piazza Salimbeni, en la que se halla el palacio Salimbeni, un palacio de estilo gótico construido en el siglo XIV. El palacio es la sede actual del banco Monte dei Paschi di Siena, fundado en 1472 como Monte Pio.
