Katedrála Sv. Emeráma - dolný kostol / St. Emeram Catedral - the lower church

Katedrála sv. Emeráma v Nitre je najstarším diecéznym chrámom na Slovensku. V r. 1998 bola povýšená na Baziliku minor. Odkazuje a nadväzuje na obdobie pôsobenia arcibiskupa Metoda, o čom svedčí Bulla Industriae Tuae, vydaná pápežom Jánom VIII., r. 880. Katedrála sa vypína na hradnom kopci (190 m n. m.). Katedrála sv. Emeráma bola vytvorená spojením troch chrámových stavieb rozličného veku. Tvoria ju: románsky kostol z 11. storočia, pôvodne gotický Horný kostol zo 14. storočia a Dolný kostol zo 17. storočia. Hrad ako odveké biskupské sídlo plní aj dnes tento účel, sídli tu Rímskokatolícka cirkev – Biskupstvo Nitra, jeho centrum tvorí Katedrála (Bazilika) sv. Emeráma a biskupský palác, ktorý je rezidenciou biskupa a sídlom kancelárií biskupského úradu.

Castle established as fulfilling this purpose even today, is situated here – the Roman Catholic Diocese of Nitra, the Roman Catholic Church, its centre is the Cathedral (Basilica) st. Emerám and the Bishop's Palace, which is the residence of the Bishop, and the Bishop's offices to the Office.
