Manzanar, Merritt Park
California
Merritt Park was the community garden at Manzanar, built by internees and named for the camp director, Ralph Merritt. It was a visually striking rock garden, ponds, bridge, gazebo, rose garden and sanctuary for the community. On my previous visit to the site in 1970's, it was not visible and overgrown. Today, park archeologist and volunteer have excavated it and have arrested it's decay.
