Sculpture by Ülo Õun, Tuhala
Estonia
The folk myth says that the Witch's well begins to overflow when the witches of Tuhala whisk themselves inside the well. This periodically rising spring - part of an underground river in the Tuhala karst region of the Nabala-Tuhala protected area, overflows during times of high-water. At a depth of 2.4 m deep, the 'Well's' brownish water (due to its swamp origins) overflows at a speed of 100 litres per second. As the surrounding river's rate of flow is at least 5,000 litres per second, this creates an effect that is one of the most unique natural phenomena in Europe. As the water pressure is created by the underground river; it is not an artesian well.
