St. John of Mata De Hoz
Northern Spain

Dedicated to St.John the Baptist, the church retains its Romanesque plant of single nave and semicircular apse. It was built in the mid-twelfth century.

The greatest interest lies in the church wall paintings from the end of XVth century, probably made by the same master who made those in La Loma several years earlier. They cover the entire apse and are organized into three friezes.

The lower one represents perhaps St. John preaching from a pulpit and his imprisonment on the right side.
In the central, the Feast of Herod and Salome to whom is presented the head of St. John.
Finally in the top, scenes of the Nativity of Christ: Annunciation to Mary, visiting her cousin Isabel, Adoration of the Magi, Birth and Circumcision.
