The rocks just visible the left of Windwick Bay are the rocks of Hesta where HMS Opal and HMS Narborough but ran aground in a storm on the night of the 12th of January 1918. The two ships had missed the entrance to Scapa Flow on their return, the Captains thought they were on the other side of South Ronaldsay and so ran aground there was only one survivor from both ships, the other 188 men lost their lives.
