La iglesia de Santa María de Melque, construida en la primera mitad del siglo VIII, es el templo altomedieval mejor conservado de la Península Ibérica.
Por sus características constructivas y estado de conservación, es un edificio único en el panorama de la arquitectura de estos años en Europa occidental. Su aparejo y su técnica constructiva son una clara herencia de la tradición arquitectónica tardorromana.
