Most of Catalina Island (88% to be precise) is managed by the Catalina Island Conservancy. Much effort goes into keeping the island wild and protecting its many endemic plants and animals - species that are found on Catalina and nowhere else in the world. Avalon is one of two towns on the island (Two Harbors at the isthmus is the other). Golf carts are a favorite mode of transportation in town. Those with automobile permits are allowed to tour the island's interior.
