Kanonersky island is one of the quiet and free of hurry places in Saint Petersburg. In 18th century it was named "Batareinuy" after the artillery gunpowder depot built on the island. Later the island had been renamed as "Kanonerskiy" after the german "Kanonier", because the artillery range placed here.

In present days all of the ships pass near the island through the ship canal to the dam and further.
