Trans Alaska Pipeline near Copper Center, Alaska
Alaska

This above-ground section of the Trans Alaska Pipeline is located just south of Copper Center Alaska. The pipe was suspended over the forest floor so as not to disturb the permafrost just under the surface. The pipe itself is not attached to the horizontal support underneath it so that it can move freely when it expands and contracts. The actual pipe is 48 inches in diameter and it is covered with insulation and a thin, protective metal cover.

Construction of the pipeline was completed in May of 1977. Since then, over 15 billion barrels of oil have been transported through the pipeline.
