I love French courtyards. What can I say? There is something mysterious about them. You wander down a street, see an open doorway that leads to a dark hallway, but at the end, there is daylight. As you walk down the hallway, the sounds of the street fade away into the darkness behind you, and then you step into the center of the courtyard and look up.
Now you are in a different world, private, perhaps several centuries old, and you imagine who walked up these steps over all of those years. What stories of rushing off to school, to work, to war reverberate in these echoing steps? Or maybe it is the sound of children calling out to each other from one landing to another to see if they can come out and play?
You pause, soak it in, feel the lives of all those who passed through here brush by you, then you are back in the present, adding your echoes to those around you, waiting for them to be discovered by someone else, perhaps centuries from now...
Languedoc-Roussillon is a French region which is composed of five departments. It is bounded by Spain, Andorra in the south and along the Mediterranean Sea (Gulf of Lions).
